(Re)Collect: a solo exhibition by Susanna Gaunt

(Re)Collect, a solo exhibition in the Kaul Gallery at Watermark Art Center in Bemidji, MN, will amplify themes of the collecting, cataloguing and displaying of natural history artifacts. While the art will simulate my version of a natural history museum, there will be room for viewers to interpret and contribute.

(Re)Collect will be on view June 7–August 24, 2024

Installations, such as "Inventory," "Coffer," and "Disperse" provide an interactive experience - viewers are encouraged to touch tags, open drawers and move seeds in the space. One new installation will literally grow through community participation. Based on a small piece called "I Collect", viewers will be encouraged to answer a pair of questions about what and why they collect. Their responses will be recorded on tags and hung on a gallery wall during the run of the show, giving the audience an opportunity to contribute to the design and content.

Watermark Art Center Hours:
Monday–Saturday | 10 am–5 pm
Sunday | Closed

Grand Rapids Players Summer Theatre Camp presents Disney's "Finding Nemo" and "Knock, Knock!"

Camp runs June 10-June 29 - WILCOX AUDITORIUM- REIF CENTER

Performances JUNE 28 at 6:30pm and June 29 at 2:00

Directed by Sharon Marty, Jean Goad, Anna Kopacek

The Grand Rapids Players Production of Disney and Pixar's Finding Nemo JR.

Music and Lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez Robert Lopez

Book Adapted by Lindsay Anderson

Music and Orchestrations Adapted and Arranged by Myrna Conn

Based on the 2003 Disney / Pixar film Finding Nemo written by Andrew Stanton, Bob Peterson, David Reynolds and directed by Andrew Stanton

Finding Nemo, JR. is a musical. It has many featured roles and unique characters. Nemo, Marlin and Dory, have significant roles, as do the Reef Dwellers (Pearl, Sheldon, Tad, their parents, Prof. Ray), the Tank Gang (Bubbles, Bloat, Gurgle,Peach, Gill), Sea Turtles (Crush, Squirt, Kai, Breeze), Sharks ( Bruce, Chum, Anchor), Moonfish, Jellyfish, a colorful and fun Sea Chorus, a pelican, and seagulls.
While many of us, remember the original animated movie and music for Professor Ray’s “Big Blue World” and Dory’s “Just Keep Swimming,” much of the music will new to summer camp participants. We will use “Big Blue World” for auditions.

Based on the 2003 Disney / Pixar film Finding Nemo written by Andrew Stanton, Bob Peterson, David Reynolds and directed by Andrew Stanton Disney’s Finding Nemo JR. is a 60-minute musical adaptation of the beloved 2003 Pixar movie Finding Nemo, with new music by award-winning songwriting team Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. Marlin, an anxious and over-protective clownfish, lives in the Great Barrier Reef with his kid Nemo, who longs to explore the world beyond their anemone home. But when Nemo is captured and taken to Sydney, Marlin faces his fears and sets off on an epic adventure across the ocean. With the help of lovable characters such as optimistic Dory, laid-back sea turtle Crush, and the supportive Tank Gang, Marlin and Nemo both overcome challenges on their journey to find each other and themselves.

Featuring memorable songs such as “Just Keep Swimming,” “Fish Are Friends Not Food,” and “Go With the Flow,” Finding Nemo JR. brings a vibrant underwater world to life on stage in a story full of family, friendship, and adventure.

Disney's Finding Nemo JR.
Is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).
All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.

Intro to Songwriting with Sara Softich Alexander

  • Virginia Market Square (weekly farmer's market) (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The workshop is open to the public.

Here are the basics that the workshop will cover:

Songwriting Brainstorming Ideas for Lyrics
Listen to 3 of your favorite songs and free write to the songs. Don’t edit your thoughts, just write!

  1. Write in different places. Observe people, things, sounds, colors. Don’t edit your thoughts, you are just writing. You can edit at a later time.

  2. Class Songwriting Exercise: Come up with 5 words as fast as you can and write them down. Then look at each word, and write the first 5 words that come to mind.

  3. Look through a magazine and write what comes to mind. Then write 5 words that go with each thought.

  4. After brainstorming ideas, the next step is to go through what you wrote and highlight the good words and lines. Then you can work to piece them together.

Most songs have only 3 to 5 chords. If you learn 5 chords on the ukulele, you can play most songs!

Sample Chords for Ukulele

Chorus
Am C F G

Funding support for this workshop comes from an ARAC Individual Artist Project Grant

We have many returning artists, crafters, makers, and exciting new ones.  You will find it at this year's festival if you are looking for watercolor or acrylic art, pottery, woodcraft, or something unique or unusual.  We mentioned food.  Those sumptuous blueberry pies and delicious burgers, brats, and pork chops are back on a stick.  Of course, there is seafood, kettle corn, and refreshing beverages - did we mention waffles too?

We need to mention our Operation Blueberry event happening in our business community.  Operation Blueberry runs from July 25 to July 28. Watch for the Operation Blueberry map, which we will post on Friday, July 19, 2024.

Since there is too much to do in one day, why not enjoy Operation Blueberry and visit our local attractions one day and return to the festival for the second day of fun, food, and exciting arts and crafts?

Festival Dates/Hours

Friday, July 26 - 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Saturday, July 27 - 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

"Is this magic?" Solo Live Performance by Kayla Schiltgen

Created and performed by Kayla Schiltgen, "is this magic?" is a new solo experimentally merging live performance and screendance to examine anti self-curation in an effort to merge the elusive with the present moment as a radical act of personal acceptance. Unfolding through a movement score prioritizing intuitive decision-making, desire, resourcefulness, and play, each iteration of "is this magic?” is a unique manifestation, offering nuance and fresh meaning.
