Zeitgeist Arts will host a special reception celebrating the opening of Friction, the final solo painting exhibition by acclaimed artist Jonathan Thunder. The exhibition is on display now and through April in the Zeitgeist Gallery in downtown Duluth.
After 25 years as an exhibiting painter, Friction marks a milestone moment in Thunder’s career and his final solo exhibition of paintings. Known for his striking visual storytelling and distinctive style, Thunder has built an international reputation for work that blends humor, mythology, and contemporary Indigenous narratives.
Reflecting on the moment, Thunder shared on his Instagram:
“I’ve been an exhibiting artist for 25 years. That’s a long time to dedicate one’s attention to a lifestyle. The industry has changed. Times have changed. And most importantly, I have continued to grow, change and seek out what life experiences are of interest to me.”
The exhibition arrives at a meaningful point in Thunder’s life, opening in March, the same month he turns 49. For Thunder, the decision to step away from exhibiting paintings comes with excitement about new creative directions.
“I feel like this decision to ‘retire’ my painting exhibit career comes on my terms, on my schedule and at a great time as new and exciting creative ventures are in front of me.”
The reception will offer the public an opportunity to experience Friction, meet the artist, and celebrate the culmination of a remarkable chapter in Thunder’s artistic journey.
Thunder’s work has been widely exhibited and is known for its imaginative imagery, sharp commentary, and deeply personal storytelling. Friction brings together new works that reflect both reflection and forward motion—marking the closing of one creative era and the beginning of another.
Reception: Wednesday, March 18th, from 5-7pm.
