The Duluth-Stämman Nordic Music and Dance Festival is a gathering time of folk music and dance sharing and learning. As practiced in Scandinavia, Nisswa, and now Duluth, this annual event gives the community an opportunity to teach itself in a concentrated traditional way. From learning to play a fiddle song for the first time, to showcasing generational talents at the peak of their folk art abilities, this festival provides a uniquely accessible chance for people of all skills-beginners to elder masters-to interact by teaching, learning, playing, and dancing together.
Many of the festival tunes and dances are performed by named groups that practice and perform together throughout the year. 7-8 of these ensembles will represent different communities from around the region, making this program the Duluth area’s most significant annual multi-community inclusive festival which includes scheduled and unscheduled jam circles and workshops facilitated by experienced teachers.
The Duluth-Stämman Nordic Music and Dance Festival received an Arts & Cultural Heritage Grant to help fund their project.
